2. Explore Vieux-Lyon and its traboules
Let's start with a classic, but a classic for good reason. Vieux-Lyon is the largest Renaissance district in Europe after Venice, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cobbled lanes, colourful facades, interior courtyards and especially the famous traboules – those secret passages linking streets through buildings – make it an ideal playground for a weekend stroll.
Take time to get lost in the Saint-Jean quarter, push open the carriage gates (the ones that are open, of course) and discover the Renaissance courtyards hidden behind them.
To go further, the tourist office offers guided tours of the traboules with a guide who tells you the history of each passage and opens doors usually closed to the public.
3. Climb to Fourvière for the view
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière dominates Lyon from its hilltop and offers one of the city's most beautiful views. Take the funicular from Vieux-Lyon (2 minutes, standard TCL ticket), admire the panorama from the esplanade then visit the basilica and its spectacular golden mosaic interior.

11. Wander the slopes of la Croix-Rousse
The Croix-Rousse neighbourhood is the village within the city. Formerly home to the canuts (silk weavers), it retains a bohemian, creative soul with its murals, independent designer shops, local cafés and its Sunday morning market (one of Lyon's largest). Climb up through the slopes, get lost in the traboules and come back down the boulevard for the view over the Presqu'île.
Don't miss the Maison des Canuts to understand the fascinating history of Lyonnais silk, nor the Fresque des Canuts (Europe's largest mural, 1,200 m²) at the top of the boulevard. 12. Throw axes at L'Hachez-Vous
Yes, you read that right. At L'Hachez-Vous, you learn to throw axes at wooden targets. It's the ultimate stress relief, accessible to everyone and surprisingly addictive. The Canadian cabin atmosphere of the venue makes the whole thing even cooler.
The learning curve is quick: within 20 minutes, even the most sceptical people are planting their axes with pride. 13. Visit the Musée Lumière
Lyon is the birthplace of cinema, and the Musée Lumière pays tribute to the brothers who invented it all. Housed in the Lumière family villa (a magnificent Art Nouveau building), the museum traces the history of the cinematograph with period objects, screenings and interactive installations. It's fascinating even if you're not a film buff.
The museum also holds regular screenings in the Hangar du Premier-Film room, the very place where the Lumière brothers shot their first film in 1895. Craving adrenaline? At Only Kart, you take the wheel of electric karts on France's longest indoor track: a two-level circuit with tunnel and bridge.

15. Stroll through the Confluence district
The former industrial district at the southern tip of the Presqu'île has been completely transformed into the Confluence neighbourhood: spectacular contemporary architecture, design shopping centre, Musée des Confluences (more on that below), nautical marina and waterside promenades. This is modern Lyon, and it's truly beautiful.
The district is also an incredible photography spot: the Cube Orange building, Jean Nouvel's Ycone residence, the Raymond Barre bridge with museum views… Architecture and design enthusiasts will be in heaven. And for the more food-oriented, La Sucrière (a former factory converted into an exhibition space) regularly hosts events and pop-up markets worth visiting.
16. Explore the Musée des Confluences
The building is spectacular (a cloud of glass and steel perched at the tip of the Presqu'île), and the collections match up. The Musée des Confluences blends natural sciences, anthropology and civilisations in permanent and temporary exhibitions that are always surprising. It's Lyon's favourite museum, and you can see why. 31. Take a boat on the Saône
Lyon is crossed by two rivers, and seeing them from the water completely changes the perspective. 34. Admire Lyon's painted murals
Lyon is the European capital of trompe-l'oeil and murals. The most famous, the Fresque des Lyonnais on Quai Saint-Vincent, depicts 30 iconic city figures on a facade of 800 m². But there are dozens more: the Fresque des Canuts (the largest in Europe), the Wall of Writers, the Wall of Cinema… Make it a treasure hunt and go mural-hunting across the city. It's free and spectacular.
The Fresque des Canuts, at the top of the Croix-Rousse, is particularly impressive: it has been redesigned and modified several times since its creation in 1987, with new characters and details added over the years. Take time to compare the mural with the real surroundings: the trompe-l'oeil is so convincing that it sometimes takes a moment to distinguish the painting from the real facade.
