1. Play at Pixel Rush Action Game
Let's start with the activity that absolutely ticks every box for a group of students. 2. Chat on the banks of the Rhône
This is perhaps the simplest activity on this list, and yet it's probably the one that best defines student life in Lyon. As soon as the weather is nice, the stone steps lining the Rhône between the Pont de la Guillotière and the Pont de l'Université fill with students.
The ritual is timeless: a €4 bottle of wine, a few tapas from the nearest Carrefour City, some friends, and you chat away. It's free, it's sociable, it's open to everyone, and it remains one of the most beautiful ways to experience Lyon. Don't forget to take your litter with you when you leave!
3. Hang out at Parc de la Tête d'Or
The 117 hectares of the Parc de la Tête d'Or are the number-one playground for Lyon students. It's free, it's vast, there's shade when it's hot, sun when you want to sunbathe between revision sessions, lawns for picnics, a large lake to run around, and even a completely free zoo where you'll spot giraffes, panthers, flamingos and ostriches.
In practice, the park adapts to every use. You want to revise quietly in a green setting? Find a peaceful spot near the rose garden. You want to exercise without paying for a gym? The lake circuit is 3.4 km and great for getting back into running at your own pace. You want to picnic with friends? Bring a blanket and a bottle — the scenery does the rest. You just want a nap? Pick a big plane tree and settle in.

4. Take advantage of free culture: museums and exhibitions
Here's one of the biggest advantages of student life in Lyon, and one of the least exploited. The city's museums make considerable efforts for young people, and it would be a shame not to take advantage.
The Musée des Confluences, that futuristic building rising at the southern tip of the Presqu'île, offers completely free admission to students under 26 years old on presentation of a valid student card. This covers access to all permanent and temporary exhibitions. When you consider that the full-price entry normally costs €9 to €12, that's an advantage not to be missed. The exhibitions blend natural sciences, anthropology, archaeology and history, all within architecture that's worth visiting in its own right.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, one of the finest museums in France, works differently but remains very accessible. You can become a member of the Beaux-Arts Campus student association for just €5 a year, which then gives you free unlimited access to the museum throughout the year. Over the course of a year, that works out to literally a few cents per visit.
And if you really love museums, be aware that there's also the Carte Musée from Lyon's municipal museums: €7 a year for 18-25 year olds, with unlimited access to all of the city's municipal museums. The MBA, Gadagne, the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance, the Musée des Tissus et des Arts Décoratifs… The perfect investment for culture lovers.

5. Taste Lyonnaise cuisine at Institut Lyfe
Here's a great tip that few students know about and that truly deserves a visit. Institut Lyfe, formerly known as Institut Paul Bocuse, is one of the world's most prestigious culinary and hospitality schools, located in Écully on the outskirts of Lyon. And something precious: its teaching restaurants are open to the public.
The concept is simple. Tomorrow's great chefs, supervised by their teachers, serve you full menus at prices that are derisory compared to what you'd pay in the city for equivalent quality. You eat at a Bocuse school, taste gastronomy-inspired cuisine, and pay only a fraction of the real price. It's also an opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes world of Lyon's haute cuisine and appreciate the work of students in training.
Reservations essential, places limited, opening hours depend on course sessions. Check their calendar on the website before planning a visit. This is the perfect plan for impressing a date or hosting parents visiting Lyon, at a price compatible with a student budget.

6. Party at Le Sucre
Le Sucre is probably the most emblematic music venue in Lyon for young people. Perched on the roof of the Sucrière building in the Confluence district, this electronic and alternative music venue hosts weekly events featuring international DJs, concerts, invited labels, and themed nights that keep all of Lyon dancing into the early hours.
What makes Le Sucre special is its setting. The venue sits at the top of the building, with a large outdoor terrace offering an open view over the modern district and the Rhône-Saône confluence. In fine weather, you can alternate between the indoor dance floor and the outdoor terrace, giving the nights a unique dimension.
Entry prices are reasonable (often between €8 and €15), and presale tickets are significantly cheaper. It's the place you have to visit at least once if you want to understand Lyon's nightlife as it's really lived.

7. Explore the traboules of Vieux-Lyon
The traboules are those passageways that allow you to cross from one street to another through private building courtyards. This is a typically Lyonnaise heritage, linked to the city's history and the canuts (silk weavers) who transported their silk from one workshop to another without fear of bad weather. Today, some of these passageways are open to the public, and exploring them is one of the most enchanting walks you can do in Lyon.
In Vieux-Lyon, don't miss the Longue Traboule (entrance at 54 rue Saint-Jean, exit at 27 rue du Bœuf), the Cour des Loges or the passages around the Tour Rose. You cross Renaissance courtyards, spiral staircases, vaulted galleries and feel as if you've plunged into the city of 500 years ago.
The exploration is completely free, and it's exactly the kind of experience tourists love when you take them there. A tip: be discreet, speak quietly, and close the doors when you leave. These are the private courtyards of occupied buildings, and maintaining public access depends on everyone's behaviour.
8. Work out on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse
There's no need to pay for a gym when you live in Lyon. The Croix-Rousse, with its formidable slopes and inhabited hilltop, is probably the best free cardio staircase in Europe. Climbing the slopes from the Terreaux up to the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse involves around 250 steps over a few hundred metres.
Beyond the slopes themselves, the neighbourhood offers plenty of options. The Montée de la Grande Côte, the Passage Thiaffait, the Montée des Carmélites and the Montée Saint-Sébastien are all natural circuits for doing cardio in a magnificent setting.
9. Make the most of free festivals
Lyon is one of the French cities that offers the most free or very affordable festivals, and it's a treasure that students absolutely must exploit. A few unmissable dates to put in your diary from the start of term.
La Fête de la Musique on 21 June transforms the entire city into one huge open-air stage, with concerts in every neighbourhood, from the slopes of the Croix-Rousse to the banks of the Rhône. Tout Lyon en Jazz offers free concerts in various locations across the city every summer. Les Nuits Sonores, a major electronic music festival, also organises free Days open to all alongside its paid programme. La Fête des Lumières in December offers four evenings of completely free light shows across the city — one of the most impressive cultural events in Europe.
The habit to adopt from September: follow the Instagram and Facebook pages of the Ville de Lyon, Tribu de Lyon and Lyon Mag. You'll discover at least one or two free opportunities to seize every week. It's one of the best ways to enrich your cultural life without spending a penny.
10. Do an escape game at Intervalle with friends
Escape games have become a staple of student evenings, and rightly so. Spending an hour locked in a room solving puzzles as a team creates bonds. Intervalle is one of Lyon's top operators, with immersive scenarios and carefully designed sets. Among their flagship rooms, one plunges players into a well-known magical universe.
The concept is simple. You arrive with 3 to 6 players, you get briefed, you're locked in the room, and you have 60 minutes to solve a series of puzzles.
For students, it's the perfect activity to split between a group: count around €25 per person for an hour's experience. Many rooms also offer student discounts or weekday deals. Ask at the time of booking.

11. Explore Lyon by Vélo'v
Lyon's Vélo'v bike-sharing scheme is one of the most practical urban inventions for a student. Over 5,000 bikes available at 428 stations throughout Lyon and Villeurbanne, accessible 24 hours a day, at ridiculously low rates for young people.
The annual youth pass (under 25s) costs around twelve euros per year and gives you access to the entire fleet with the first 30 minutes free on every trip. In practice, this means most of your urban journeys cost you nothing.
Beyond daily transport, Vélo'v is also a great way to discover Lyon. You can head up to Île Barbe, go down to Confluence and the Musée des Confluences, or simply cycle around the Parc de la Tête d'Or. A day exploring Lyon by bike is one of the best ways to understand the city's geography and discover corners you never suspected existed.
12. Eat a €5 pizza at Ta5ty Pizza
When you're a student in Lyon, you know the challenge of "eating out without breaking the bank." Ta5ty Pizza is one of the best answers to that challenge. The concept is simple, formidable, and tailored for student life, with the option to build your own pizza from over 50 fresh ingredients prepared to order.
On the menu you'll find the classics (Margherita, 4 Fromages, Chèvre Miel, Reine…) at €5, but also more premium creations with truffle, burrata, green pesto, raclette… that remain very reasonably priced. It's the perfect plan for an impromptu dinner with friends before a night out, or for sharing pizzas on the banks of the Rhône on a summer evening.

13. Get lost in Vieux-Lyon
Vieux-Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Renaissance neighbourhood in Europe after Venice. And the best way to discover it is not to follow a guide or a set itinerary: it's to get deliberately lost. Take a free afternoon, leave without a plan and let yourself be carried along by the cobbled lanes that wind up and down.
You'll discover Rue Saint-Jean with its perfectly preserved pink, ochre and yellow facades. The Cathédrale Saint-Jean with its 14th-century astronomical clock that still chimes every day. The Rue du Bœuf and its secret traboules. The tiny squares with their fountains, the regional produce shops, the authentic bouchons, the craftsmen who still work as they did two hundred years ago. All of this in an atmosphere that has absolutely nothing in common with the rest of Lyon.
The advantage of Vieux-Lyon is that it lends itself to all modes. You can go in "cultural walk" mode to discover architectural gems, in "shopping" mode to treat yourself to Lyonnaise silks or regional products, or in "evening out" mode to finish up in a bouchon or traditional wine bar. It's free, and every visit will reveal a corner you hadn't yet explored.
14. Have a beer and a burger at Ninkasi
Ninkasi is a Lyon institution for students. It's at once a craft brewery (the beers are produced locally in Tarare), a convivial restaurant, and a social venue where you can spend several hours without getting bored. With around ten establishments spread across the city and beyond, you'll always find a Ninkasi near your neighbourhood.
The atmosphere is typically student-friendly: large communal tables, background music, house draught beers (the Blonde, the Brune, the Blanche, plus seasonal editions), and a menu of burgers, fish and chips, salads and sharing plates at accessible prices. Several venues also offer live concerts, karaoke nights, match screenings or DJ evenings.

15. Take the funicular up to Fourvière
If you've never taken the Lyon funicular, you're missing one of the most typically Lyonnaise experiences. The "ficelle," as the locals call it, is one of the oldest in the world and continues to link the lower part of the city to the heights of Fourvière and Saint-Just. You access the station from Vieux-Lyon (Place Saint-Jean), and in just two minutes you arrive at the top of the hill with, at your feet, one of the most beautiful views in France.
Up there, you'll find the Basilique de Fourvière with its breathtaking Byzantine mosaic interior, the ancient Gallo-Roman theatre that hosts Les Nuits de Fourvière, and above all the esplanade offering a 180° panorama over the entire city. This is where you have to come to watch the sunset, especially in fine weather. The sky turns pink and orange, the city gradually lights up, the Alps appear in the distance on clear days, and you understand why so many people fall in love with Lyon.
With your student TCL card (Pass'Région or annual Année Jeune subscription at €31.50/month for under-28s not in school, or even more advantageous rates for grant recipients), the funicular is included in your transport pass. You can therefore make the return trip for free as many times as you like. It's one of the city's best free spots, absolutely to be recommended for a first date, a visit from friends or simply a relaxing break between two busy weeks of classes.

Essential cultural tips every student should know
Beyond the 15 activities, Lyon is packed with cards and subscriptions designed for young people. For many students, these represent real savings over the course of a year. Here are the must-knows from the moment you arrive.
Culture Campus (€18, students only). If you could only remember one, this might be it. This offer from the Métropole de Lyon gives you access, over the year, to 3 show tickets and 1 cinema ticket to choose from among 76 cultural venues across the area. And the list is impressive: it includes major festivals such as Nuits Sonores, Nuits de Fourvière, and Woodstower. For €18, you gain access to events that would normally cost several tens of euros each. Unbeatable value for money.
La Carte Culture (€10 for 18-25 year olds, free under certain conditions). This card is free for RSA recipients, people with disabilities, those who are unemployed or non-taxable, and costs just €10 for young people aged 18 to 25. It gives one year's access to temporary and permanent exhibitions at Lyon's 6 municipal museums, as well as all the services of the Municipal Library. As a bonus, it provides numerous perks on a selection of shows, cinema sessions and partner museums throughout the year. For the price of a sandwich, you have your Lyon cultural passport.
La Carte Bibliothèque (€10 for under-25s). Valid for one year, it gives you access to all the services of Lyon's city libraries: borrowing up to 20 items at once, on-site consultation and access to digital resources. Essential for revising in a quiet environment, borrowing novels, comics, films or music, or simply making use of free and pleasant workspaces dotted around the city.
Les Scènes de Musiques Métropolitaines. If you're a concert fan, be aware that a subscription to one of the major metropolitan venues (Le Marché Gare, Le Périscope, Bizarre! or l'Épicerie Moderne) gives you reduced rates. A great way to see more concerts across the whole metropolitan area without blowing your music budget.
La Lyon City Card 1 an (€33.90). At a single price, this card gives you 365 days to enjoy 4 leisure activities of your choice, plus numerous discounts and one-off offers from ONLYLYON Tourisme. The perfect option if you want to (re)discover the city as a tourist on your home turf, or if you regularly host friends and family.
A few extra habits for student life in Lyon
Beyond the culture cards, here are a few habits to adopt from the start of your Lyon life to make the most of everything the city has to offer.
Follow the culture pages of your university's student associations. They constantly share great tips, free concerts, private view openings and student nights at preferential rates.
Remember your neighbourhood market days. The Croix-Rousse market (Tuesday to Sunday morning), the Saint-Antoine market on the quays, the Guillotière market… They're cheaper than supermarkets and infinitely more enjoyable.
Always keep your student card on you. Too many students leave it at university and miss out on free entry and discounts that quickly add up (museums, reduced-price cinema, bookshops, certain restaurants…).
